By the time you read this it will be the middle of winter and the middle of the off season for cricket. This season just finished saw Vikings Cricket Club with only two teams making it through to the finals series, and one of these went all the way to become Premiers in 5th grade. Congratulations to Vikings Red team for a fantastic season overall.
This year we had both of our 5th grade sides in the top four, with Vikings Blue finishing as Minor Premiers but were not able to beat Nth Ryde RSL in the semi final. So it was left to the Vikings Red team to fight for the honors, which they did very well indeed. Our 4th grade team was so close to a spot in the semi final they could almost taste it, but got piped at the post and just missed out. Surprisingly both our 1st and 2nd grade sides missed out on the finals this year, thanks in no small part to some unfortunate wash outs, in some cases coming when our teams were on top in their respective games.
During this season our teams had some fantastic victories and the odd close clash where we came away without the points. The competition throughout has been very close in all grades, and all players should be proud of their efforts during the games. At times there has been the need for players to fill in for other teams in higher grades, sometimes only finding out just before the start of play, but this just emphasized the Club spirit within the Vikings.
This season also saw Vikings have its first foray into in2Cricket, which is Cricket NSW’s beginner level cricket for kids aged from 4years to 8years. It was quite a successful initial exposure with eight children participating. The clubs thanks go to Mark Stockton for taking up the challenge, everyone enjoyed the 12 week course and we will be looking to expand it next season.
While the cricketers take a well earned break over the winter, we would like to wish our fellow winter clubs (Epping YMCA netball, Dundas United soccer and Shamrocks rugby league) the best of luck in their respective competitions. We trust you can finish the season with the silverware and great memories to keep you going through your off-season.
Vikings would like to take this opportunity to thank the members, guests and staff of Dundas Sports Club for the ongoing generous support and general camaraderie that is enjoyed. The relationship between the two clubs is strong, and grows with each season, as both cricketers and bowlers can be found swapping tales on how their particular day faired over a beverage or two. Also a big thank you to all members, staff and guests of Dundas Sports Club for your support of our weekly meat raffles. We look forward to seeing you all during our off season, and when the cricket season returns in September, back at the club.
